The Luddites

A speculative project for Nottingham's annual Night Light, 2022, 'Rebel City' theme.

One of the many times Nottingham and its people rebelled was in 1812, when Ned Ludd smashed his master knitted frame, in protest for better oay and the replacement of master stocking makers with machines, causing many people their jobs. This event set off the Luddites movement, named after Ned Ludd.

The performance would be confined to the one area - the forum of the Arkwright Building in NTU - due to the pandemic. There would be three puppeteers controlling the Master puppet, as well as an additional three workers, going in and out of the 'loom' box throughout the performance - until the riot, when they drag the strings from the loom out of the box.
